Concrete vs plastic vs fiberglass septic tanks: what changes, what doesn't

The adjustments are derived midpoint deltas from one consistent source table, and they come with a disclosed caveat: HomeGuide's independent table orders concrete as the most expensive material, the opposite of the table above. Concrete: the default for a reason
Concrete is what most counties see the most of, and what some approve most readily. Its weight is both its virtue and its cost: a full tank stays put in a high water table without anchoring, but delivery takes a boom truck, access matters, and a cracked or spalled tank decades in is repaired with excavation, not a patch from the surface. If your lot has tight access — no room for a heavy truck to reach the hole — that constraint alone can decide the material question before price does.
Plastic: light, corrosion-proof, and buoyant
Polyethylene tanks can be moved by two people and an excavator, which makes them the access-problem solver and often trims installation labor. They do not corrode and they do not spall. Their engineering constraint is buoyancy: an empty or just-pumped plastic tank in saturated soil wants to float, and a floated tank is a dug-up tank. Anti-buoyancy anchoring and correct bedding are solved problems, but they are exactly the corners a cheap install cuts — ask the bidder how the tank is anchored, in writing. A few jurisdictions restrict plastic for certain installs; your county's published rules settle it in one phone call.
Fiberglass: the watertight middle path
Fiberglass shares plastic's corrosion resistance and most of its weight advantage, with stiffer walls and one-piece construction that resists deflection. Its band starts higher — $1,200–$2,000 tank-only — and in many markets fewer local suppliers stock it, which can add freight that no national band captures. Like plastic, it needs proper anchoring in wet soils.
What material does NOT change
Required capacity. Tank sizing runs on your home's bedroom count under the local code — 1,000 gallons is the minimum in most jurisdictions, and the tank size tool maps bedrooms to gallons with the design-flow arithmetic shown. Material also does not change your system type: whether the lot needs a conventional, chamber, aerobic, or mound system is a soil question, priced on the system-type page. Get those two decisions right first; the tank material is the last few hundred dollars of a five-figure decision.
On lifespan claims
Cost content on the internet is full of confident lifespan numbers for each material, usually stated to the year and usually unsourced. None of the cost studies in our source list publishes one at all. The nearest thing to a primary answer we have found says less than those articles do, and says it more carefully.

What the industry agrees on directionally: concrete's failure mode is slow structural cracking, plastic's is buoyancy and deformation from bad bedding, fiberglass's is damage at installation time — and a correctly installed, regularly pumped tank of any material outlasts a neglected one of any other.
