What a perc test actually is

A percolation test measures how fast water drains through your soil. A technician — in many counties a licensed soil evaluator, in some the health department's own staff — digs a series of holes in the proposed drainfield area, pre-soaks them, then times how far the water level drops. The result, in minutes per inch, decides whether the soil can absorb effluent at all, and how large the drainfield must be if it can. Slow perc means a bigger field, and very slow perc means a conventional system is off the table entirely — that is the fork that sends projects toward the mound and aerobic price tiers.
